I don't have a single way to create shaders/materials. I use whatever technique is needed to create the illusion or desired effect. All the materials below are made using Mental Ray and Maya materials and utilities.

The image above is a sample of materials replication job. The goal was to create a set of materials similar as the one from The Incredibles but in Mental Ray.

Here Is a another test Showing the power of layers in this case taking a 3d render to make it look like a 2d illustrated image, Once the initial setup is done 3d elements can be render for a 3d workflow and a 2d look.
